I was born in Seoul, South Korea, and obtained a Graduate Degree in Visual Arts at Sejong University. I live and work in Paris, France. Imaginary voyages between paradise and earth, path between clouds and valleys, I create starry paths for the eyes. My universe is poetic. Like an inner journey, I invite the viewer on a walk, to follow me through these aerial views. They come from my childhood in Korea, my endless love of painting, and my metalworking; it is from these three aspects that I have constructed my universe. From my past in Korea I keep the memory of materials and the beliefs of my ancestors. Rice paper is the outer layer of these memories, enamel saucer their secret symbols. Thereupon were printed footprints, signs of life, and I already imagined paintings, landscapes. In France, I took over this raw material, disaggregated it in water, remodelled to remove its smooth, native side, and create an irregular texture, more vivid. I reappropriated the rice paper to make it more manifest and share my imaginary paths.
Made from the inner bark of Mulberry trees, the hand-made paper called Hanji is famously known for its strength and ability to be used for multiple purposes. They say that its origins can be traced back over 2000 years. Hanji making is an integral part of my artistic vision as it requires a long process comprising of numerous steps, and a meticulous care end to end. Instead of flattening the paper, I let the random embossed design to appear. I use my brush to create patterns of lines to emphasize or to impede the natural relief of the paper. By way of my own body’s movements I create a rhythm, without a structured plan.
Just as a scent can bring back memories of a certain moment, so my paintings, which I call paths, can awaken the history buried in each of us, and involve us in a personal and spiritual journey. Each line is seen as a day, or an instant we have already lived through or that we are still living in.
My paintings chime with the paths of our lives and the aim of the artist is indeed unveiled by the names I give to my works. But my paths might also be imaginary landscapes which are made up of deep forests, dunes, and waterscapes.
